Who: Bullies/Targets
Who Bullies:
Don’t be fooled by assumptions that women don’t bully, and those in the helping professions don’t bully, and sales people and the super ambitious will bully.
You cannot tell a bully by his/her profession.
But, you can tell if someone is a bully by how you feel after working with him/her (see above for feelings measures).
We know that men, women, boys, girls, bosses, co-workers, subordinates, consultants, even coaches may be bullies.
The relative power of the bully to the target has serious impact on what one can do about the bullying.
-
If some bully in your office is a malcontent or incompetent and nobody likes him, then you can bet you have a good shot at getting something done about it.
-
If the bully is a boss with lots of friends in high places and he seems to be meeting his goals, then odds are it’s going to be tough (but not impossible) to take action.
-
If the bully is going after your job, career, team, and in so doing is trashing your reputation, then the action plan is going to be really challenging.
