Mobbing in the Workplace

Friday, June 4th, 2010

Here’s an interesting and credible article on workplace mobbing. And the mobbing I have seen certainly mirrors the framework in this article.

A good summary of bullying and aggression issues is worth the time it takes to review. So much of what people experience has explanations, labels, and resources for action. The more you know…

7th International Conference on Workplace Bullying: June 2-5!

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

I am presenting my research on workplace bullying at the upcoming international conference on… Workplace Bullying. Here’s a blog post sent out by University of Galmorgan, Wales, the sponsoring organization. Over 200 delegates will be presenting during the 3 day fest. We will be focusing on the intersection of theory and practice (or what we are learning about workplace bullying and how to apply that learning to create safer and more productive workplaces. Yippee. My idea of FUN!

Building Trust/Destroying Trust

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

30344605_thb  “I’m not upset that you lied to me, I’m upset that from now on I can’t believe you.”
- Friedrich Nietzsche

Trust is a fragile and delicate commodity and a critical one. Without it we’re unable to relax or move forward; without trust we cannot believe.

What is trust?

According to Dr. D. C. Tway, Jr., A Construct of Trust (2003) trust is a state of readiness for unguarded interaction. Think about that for a moment… Unguarded interaction! Isn’t that an amazing concept? Imagine being relaxed around others. Imagine having the confidence to be open to whatever happens in any given moment.

Now think about the people around you. Do you have the state of readiness with any of them? Do you trust your business colleagues, your boss? What about your relationship partner, is there trust there? Do you trust yourself?

19144773_thbMost people think of domestic violence as…domestic and workplace violence as…workplace.

But with more homicides happening in the workplace than ever before, what we know is some of these are domestic problems brought into work. Battered women and men are harassed, stalked, and intimidated while at work. The question is, what will and can employers do to help.

Here’s a thoughtful and accurate piece on this problem and one solution: “The first step is to make all employees aware that there is support for the victim of assault, even when the assault occurs at home, at your business, that there will be trained staff that know what to look for in situations that include domestic assault. A well thought out, well announced safety plan, is put in place by co-workers for the office place and in support of the victim of domestic assault.”   Read more here.
