What’s New at Confidence Connections

Holiday time is upon us.

Some of my clients are asking for a coaching gift certificate for themselves or others. I can do that. Typically this is for short-term (up to 4 sessions), topic specific coaching including a Kolbe evaluation (wherein we measure your natural problem-solving style and review the exciting opportunities that stem from that knowledge) or we cover Patrick Lencioni’s great 5 Dysfunctions of a Team, and of course, Marshal Goldsmith’s What Got you Here.

Email me for details and special packages. Make your holiday season the best ever.

Seeking a Promotion? One Woman’s Strategic Plan!

I have a client who found me via my website because she was suddenly failing at work. She went from rising star to outsider. How did this happen? She was being groomed for a promotion but it seemed what she had been doing wasn’t going to work for the next position. She was in real trouble. We used Marshal Goldsmith’s What Got You Here Won’t Get You There! to evaluate the behaviors that worked for her in the past but wouldn’t make her the leader they need now. We adopted the entire plan of action and coupled it with some organization and systems coaching for a dynamic improvement in her leadership skills. She’s on her way to that promotion.

When Dealing with Workplace Bullies:
Who’s in Charge and Who’s Responsible for What Happens to Us?

I write a lot about bullying and harassment because these issues represent central issues in our lives-power, control, self-esteem, and confidence. I wrote an article on bullying in which I compared fear-based bullying with what I call Strategic Bullying.  Strategic Bullying is when the bully knows what’s going on and what he/she is doing and is bullying for certain ends. The article brought in wonderful responses (mostly in support of my thesis). It also raised the specter of personal responsibility.

Who is responsible for the bullying? Perpetrator, Target, or Both? Of course the bully is responsible for the abusive behavior. But that means we have to have a victim. I am finding it helpful to look at personal responsibility in all matters, including bullying.

If you don’t respond to bullying you are sure to stimulate more bullying. I know that’s not the intention of being passive but that’s what happens. Of course, it’s often not a matter of what we do when bullying, it will continue and escalate. But the cost of not responding is really high: We pay with our self-esteem and our confidence. Ouch!

Both fear based bullying and Strategic Bullying demand a response. Responses range from recording and reporting to organizing your colleagues for a counter insurgency. Review my article for some thoughts on responding to difficult situations.

If you have a bully in your life, OR, if you think you need to take more responsibility for the direction of your life, put yourself back in charge and take action.  Need help with that? Call your coach and develop your strategic plan!
